Post Game Diesel Fuel: Beware of the "Mad Men"

I think we’re all suckers for the pitchman; I know I can be, and last night was a fine example of what I’m referencing. Instead of looking at what the boys in Vegas were saying (Dallas -3), I had to use a long-tom on the out come, because we were talking about Dallas. Dallas, the team that has the new stadium, where the Super Bowl will be played. Dallas, the team that has all that talent. Dallas, the team that has those powder blue uniforms and the helmet with the star.
Yep, I bought into they’re a top 3 or 4 team in the NFL. They may become that, but right now, as a lot of races go, everybody is bunched in the pack. And, it should be pointed out Washington is right there with them, along with the Giants, and even the Eagles.
Dallas has problems with their offensive line right now; can they patch it before they fall flat? Washington has problems with their offense period; where are the playmakers? The Giants have problems with consistency; will it be another year like last year for them? And, lastly the Eagles have numerous problems, the most salient being; what are they going to do about their quarterback.
So I’m going to do as Ulysses did in the Illiad, in dealing with the Sirens.  l’m either going to seal my ears with wax, or have my crew lash me to the mast, so that my ship of predictions won’t be driven into the the rocks. By the way, who makes the preferred wax and bindings? Hmm, I’m looking over this advertisement and it says............

  3. Dallas beat themselves last night with really stupid "football 101" penalties. Washington did not even capitalize on those penalties.

I totally agree about Washington's offense. Where was it? The defense carried them through the entire game. McNabb is going to have to turn the offense around.

Washington has been my favorite team since I was 7 years old (a long, long time). They got lucky last night. I'm hoping it was due to the fact that it was the first regular game of the season. We will see.

  5. But in the end, we beat Dallas and have to be happy about that even tho we did not look that good on the field! Hopefully we won't look like total idiots next week!
    Fight for Old D.C.

  6. Hail to the Redskins!!! this was the first game... a lot of jitters on both sides...less on the Redskins side, penalties hurt Dallas, but the Skins played a good solid defensive game...with some mistakes in the secondary, but for the most part they looked pretty damn good...don't count McNabb out yet..it is a new team with a new style...he will shine when he settles...keep the faith

  7. Yes, Washington was lucky, Yes, Dallas played one of the worst games of the weekend. Yes, the Redskins offense was hit or (a lot of) misses. The thing to remember is that, at the end of the season, they don't deduct the "lucky" wins. And remember, as the old saying goes, a Lucky Win always beats a Loss (of any kind)!

  8. There was a point in the game when the Skins had a chance to go up by 3 scores and then their offense fluttered. Dallas, of course, made a miraculous comeback to almost win the game at the end. I believe that if they have a chance to be successful in the NFC East and prove they are capable of making it to the playoffs, they will need to learn to produce those necessary points to take away the will of the opposing teams comeback. I believe, that with a stable coaching staff led by Shanahan, they have a chance to achieve this -probably not this year but maybe the following year through systematic discipline and fortitude. I wish the Skins the best of luck and the least heartache. They have a chance of shedding their bad-luck image of the past.

  9. This is one in the Win Column. No matter how we got it. Yes we have talent on the team but what about will to win as a team. No one can win by themselves. TEAM EFFORT that's what counts.

  10. Who care how we did it? We WON! Dallas is an over-hyped team and, on Sunday night, they looked only average. Our Defense was great, with a few minor lapses. But, all in all, they are clearly the strength of the team. Still, the 3-4 takes a lot of getting used to. Very few tackles from the linemen. Lots of tackles by the secondary. Hmmm. Not sure that's good. The Offense? Well, that has me more than a bit worried. Need someone to complement Moss, BADLY. Need another decent running back. Bench Mike Sellers - he doesn't block and can't catch balls. Why is he playing? And can someone tell me why we got rid of Hunter Smith in favor of Bidwell? Smith was good last year. I just don't get it. Our punting situation is absurd and will cost us a game this year, mark my words. And why in the world did K. Shanahan call two consecutive passes to Armstrong (an unproven arena football player), when you have Cooley and Moss on the team? Ridiculous goal line play calling that cost us 7 points, I think.
